Right To Know: Chemical Survey Information

Section 14i of the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Act (MIOSHA), Act No. 154, P. A. of 1974, as amended, requires that each fire chief prepare and disseminate to each firefighter information on facilities within their jurisdiction that use or produce hazardous chemicals. The Michigan Fire Prevention Code, Act No. 207, P. A. of 1941, as amended, requires that any firm handling hazardous chemicals provide information to the fire chief upon request. This allows the fire department to gather information on each chemical so that the requirements of MIOSHA can be met. To assist our department in fulfilling its responsibilities under MIOSHA, we are requesting that you complete the enclosed survey. If your firm does not use or produce any hazardous chemicals (see attached definitions),you still need to complete the form. This information can be beneficial to you and your firefighting personnel when responding to a fire or other emergency at your facility. If you have questions or need help completing the chemical survey contact the Kimball Township Fire Department at (810) 982-9461

Fire Inspection

New Construction:

Frequently referred to as “technical inspections,” inspections of new construction are provided for all structures built within the Township of Kimball and contracted areas (excluding State-owned buildings). These inspections must be ‘passed’ prior to occupancy. Technical inspections range from a visual check of sprinkler and alarm systems to an observed discharge of a special extinguishing system. Technical inspections are conducted by Prevention Division staff inspectors, who have been trained and certified in this area. To get more information on where the Prevention Division inspection program fits within this process contact Kimball Township Fire department at 810-982-9461 for more Information.

General Business:

There are a number of occupancies within the Township of Kimball and contracted areas that receive regular fire and life-safety inspections, such as day care, health care and institutional occupancies. Also, all general business and industrial structures receive a thorough inspection of fire protection features annually. The department also insures that all fire protection systems within structures (sprinklers, alarms, elevators, etc.) receive an annual inspection by an independent third-party contractor (this is a state requirement enforced by local municipalities). Any business within the Township of Kimball and contracted areas is subject to a periodic fire and life safety inspection by Kimball Township Fire Department.

 Residential:

The Kimball Township Fire Department inspects all multi-family residential occupancies within the Township of Kimball and contracted areas, including fraternity and sorority houses. Due to the unique risks posed by multi-family residential structures, KTFD has made them a priority for regular fire and life safety inspections.

Single-family living:

The Uniform Fire Code does not give direct authority to the fire department to conduct fire and life safety inspections of single-family homes and duplexes. However, through the KTFD "Home Fire Safety Assessment" program, homeowners can effectively conduct their own fire and life safety inspection. If you have a concern about your private residence, contact the Kimball Township Fire Department at (810) 982-9461

Public Assembly:

The phrase “Public Assembly” refers to any structure or occupancy that is designed for 50 or more people to meet for entertainment, worship, dining or amusement. Since so many people are present at these venues (convention centers, bars/restaurants, theaters, etc.), it is necessary to meet strict fire code requirements and to ensure that the requirements are maintained over time. KTFD maintains regular inspection rotation(s) of places of public assemblies.
